چکیده

Loss of sensory hair cells in the inner ear results in two global health impairments: hearing loss and balance disorders. In humans and other mammals, auditory hair cells damage is permanent and causes irreversible hearing loss. By contrast, hair cells in non-mammalian vertebrates are able to regenerate, prompting studies into the epigenetic mechanisms and signaling pathways that regulate hair cell regeneration. This review paper describes the current knowledge of the roles of epigenetic modifications and various signaling pathways in hair cell regeneration, and tries to understand how modulating their activity to promote the regenerative potential of supporting cells/progenitor cells. Understanding the mechanisms in regulating hair cell regeneration of vertebrates might shed light on the potential therapeutic targets in humans.

Re-activation of Wnt/β-catenin Signaling Pathway in Hair Follicle Stem Cells in Treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia

Hair loss is a common hair disorder in human population. It affects quality of life and there are ongoing attempts to find permanent treatment for this condition. But, today there is no completely safe and protective treatment for all. Hair follicle stem cells are alive, but quiescence in androgenetic alopecia and are potentially active and can proliferate and differentiate, then regenerate hai...

The role of the desert hedgehog signaling pathway during degeneration and regeneration of peripheral nerves

The desert hedgehog (Dhh) signaling pathway is involved in the development of peripheral nerves (PNs). Dhh-null mice show abnormal neuronal development and perineurial barrier function. As it was previously shown that dhh is mainly expressed in developmental nerves and Sonic hedgehog protein (dhh homologous) has therapeutic effects in neuronal survival, we attempted to investigate the possible ...

Making sense of Wnt signaling—linking hair cell regeneration to development

Wnt signaling is a highly conserved pathway crucial for development and homeostasis of multicellular organisms. Secreted Wnt ligands bind Frizzled receptors to regulate diverse processes such as axis patterning, cell division, and cell fate specification. They also serve to govern self-renewal of somatic stem cells in several adult tissues. The complexity of the pathway can be attributed to the...

Gene-expression analysis of hair cell regeneration in the zebrafish lateral line.

Deafness caused by the terminal loss of inner ear hair cells is one of the most common sensory diseases. However, nonmammalian animals (e.g., birds, amphibians, and fish) regenerate damaged hair cells. To understand better the reasons underpinning such disparities in regeneration among vertebrates, we set out to define at high resolution the changes in gene expression associated with the regene...
